HBC 522 is a disease-resistant, high-yielding, classic aroma selection that is a sustainable alternative or supplement to the classic "C" hops. The variety was bred by Hop Breeding Company (HBC) in 2006, so HBC 522 has been in our experimental pipeline for 18 years as we have been evaluating how it performs in the field and in beer. It has a pleasant yet mild citrus aroma with specific notes of lemon, grapefruit, orange, and pine. Agronomically, the variety has a broad resistance to known strains of powdery mildew and a very late picking window, enabling better utilization of farming facilities. Efficiency gains over the reference variety, Cascade, exceed 25% in production per acre. This results in fewer inputs and lower costs per lb. produced, thus providing substantial advancements in economic and environmental sustainability for the hop industry's supply chain.
